At the April 2023 meeting, the ML Birders were treated to a presentation by Tyler Savage of the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge<\/a>. He brought two live birds, a Turkey Vulture and a Red-tailed Hawk.<\/p>

Tyler made it his first \u201corder of business\u201d to prep the floor with a plastic tarp just in case our avian friends received nature\u2019s call. Fortunately, only two \u201cpresents\u201d were dropped.<\/p>

Thus prepared, Tyler gave a very interesting presentation. He began by explaining what the Cedar Run Refuge is all about: a dual mission of saving injured wildlife, and educating the public through programs and visits to their sanctuary.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The avian visitors each had a large white carrying cases, to protect them and keep them calm. From the first case, Tyler brought out a five year old Turkey Vulture<\/a> named Apollo. While we see Apollo as a Turkey Vulture, he sees himself more as one of us; he was brought to the refuge as a very young bird after he had \u201cimprinted\u201d on his human rescuers. Because of this history, he could not be released to live with actual Turkey Vultures, although he was healthy otherwise. Turkey Vultures are nature’s sanitation workers, and we learned many interesting facts about them. For example, they hunt by smell, rather than sight or sound. Apollo was very well behaved, stepping around on Tyler\u2019s gloved hand and occasionally spreading his wings.<\/p>

The Red-tailed Hawk<\/a>, named Aldora, is over twenty years old, and he is blind in one eye, making him unable to hunt. If released back into the wild he would not have the keen vision or depth perception neccessary for a raptor seeking prey. A handsome dark Red-tail with an extensive brown band across his belly, he too was extremely well behaved, staring at us with his good eye as we were staring at him.<\/p>

We were not allowed to touch the birds, but Tyler had specimens:\u00a0 the wing of a Red-tailed Hawk and talons of a Red-tail, Great Horned Owl and an Osprey that were passed around to the audience. It was surprising how soft the wing was and how lethal the talons looked.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Founded in 1951 by Jim and Betty Woodford and their daughter Jeanne, Woodford Cedar Run is supported by donations and grants, allowing them to act as the primary wild animal hospital and rehabilitation center for most of southern New Jersey. They have approximately fifty unreleasable animals, including birds, mammals, and amphibians, and many of these can be seen by school groups, bird clubs and individuals by appointment. The preserve also has miles of walking trails and a nature center\/museum. Our club member Joe Costanza served on the board of the Refuge for several years, and designed some of their facilities.<\/p>

The club is planning a trip to the refuge on Wednesday, May 17th, 2023.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
