We have had another busy year with monthly meetings in the Linden Room the first Wednesday of each month except July and August and a monthly field trip to visit birding areas mostly in New Jersey. We have several excellent birders who have become residents in our community in the past several years and several birders who come to us through the Pathways Program. These people have added to our discovering new areas to bird and have helped us to increase the number of birds we have seen or heard on our field trips. We sadly lost Arthur Steitz due to death, a long time devoted birder.

Our Monthly Meetings have included programs by residents. Joe Costanza discussed Bird Photography, and Perry Krakora told us about birds we might see on the Jetties at Barnegat Light, on Long Beach Island. Alex Webb explained how he made his bird Wood Carvings. Our May Meeting will include a presentation by Joe Jordan, Joe Costanza and Miriam Swartz about the Three Mimics, birds that mimic other birds with their calls, ie. the Brown Thrasher, Northern Mockingbird and Gray Catbird.

Outside speakers included Barbara Jones who tried to help us identify the elusive shorebirds; Louise Zemaitis from Cape May showed pictures of Birds and Habitats; and Burlington County Naturalist, Jennifer Bulava treated us to her knowledge and pictures of the Seven Burlington County Parks. We presented a new DVD called DUCKumentary, which showed the first year of life for the beautiful Wood Duck.

Our field trips took us to Long Beach Island State Park, the Forsythe (Brigantine) National Wildlife Refuge, Bombay Hook in Delaware, Barnegat Light and Long Beach Island, the Shark River Estuary, Mannington Marsh and Pedricktown. We went to Estelle Manor and Dorothy, where the M.L. Birders saw many Red-headed Woodpeckers, a first sighting for many participants. In April, we start additional short field trips to local areas to catch sight of warblers and other birds migrating through Southern New Jersey.

We continue to maintain a bulletin board in the hallway leading from the Community Building to Court 6, featuring the pictures of birds we see on our Field Trips.
