Gulls

Boat-tailed Grackles in flight
Boat-tailed Grackles

Two ML Birders decided to test the old adage “there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing.” It was a cold and very windy but sunny day at Barnegat Light and we can report that long johns, parkas, warm gloves and heavy winter clothing say the adage is correct. Our biggest problem was being able to hold the binoculars steady in heavy wind. The birds took the sane route and hunkered down to stay out of the wind. The only birds that were very ubiquitous were the gulls with huge flocks aloft and lining the shorelines. The sea ducks were quite scattered and not very abundant. Off shore we picked up Northern Gannets that we missed last year. Yellow-rumped Warblers and Boat-tailed Grackles were the most common land birds. We did manage to see twenty-five species and enjoy a nice lunch at Kubel’s.
