Our highly anticipated trip to Bombay Hook didn’t turn out quite as planned. We had hoped to add Brown-headed Nuthatch to our trip list, and had contacted a Delaware expert for advice and directions. But something went wrong, and the little birds were nowhere to be found on Big Stone Beach Road south of Frederica, Del. We did see close-up Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and a few lingering Red-breasted Mergansers off the beach.

Something else went wrong, as well.  Wednesday was supposed to be clear. It was hazy and bright at the beach, but by the time we reached the Bombay Hook NWR, the sky was gray and threatening. The amazing Purple Martin colony at the headquarters was crowded and busy, but few other land birds appeared. When we reached the first pool we were delighted with the flock of 70 Avocets, but more kept arriving! By the time we left, there were nearly 300. Big flocks of Dunlin were circling in synchronized flight,  a thrill to see. More eagles and plenty of Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons were also in the pool; but we had to continue further along the auto tour before finding even one Snowy Egret. Sparrows and other small birds remained invisible, and we remained in the car due to the rain. Still, we were quite pleased with our list for the day.
