Edwin B. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR, November 22, 2019
The ML Birders took a second trip out to the Forsythe Refuge to get a better assemblage of migrating ducks and Snow Geese. We did find a nice flock of Snow Geese and a diverse variety of ducks, but unlike past trips we did not see large numbers of ducks. The expected shorebirds like Dunlin, Greater Yellowlegs and Semipalmated Sandpipers were relatively abundant.
At one stop a ‘twitcher’ (British birder) told us that he saw a Long-billed Dowitcher in with a flock of Greater Yellowlegs but I don’t believe any of us were able to pick it up. Our route through the refuge does not take us into song bird habitat, but we did see about eight Eastern Bluebirds at the entrance to the loop road, as well as the expected Yellow-rumped Warblers. We totaled 42 species for the day.
The weather was pleasant and turned sunny as we were in the home stretch of the loop. Tallying up our list at Shea’s put the cap on our outing.
