At Medford Leas, kayaking is a three-season sport. An enthusiastic group of residents meet regularly on Saturday mornings to enjoy paddling on the Rancocas Creek from Kirby’s Mill to downtown Medford. Residents may go out at other times as well, using the kayaks provided at the dock or supplying their own. Several residents have stored their personal crafts in the extra space for boats that was available. Paddles, life jackets, and carriers are stored in a locked shed to which residents have access.
As part of recent renovations to the Medford Campus, the boat dock was resurfaced, a kayak launcher was added, and new racks were constructed to hold the additional donated boats. Although the Maintenance Department is responsible for upkeep of the facilities, it is residents who organize outings, maintain equipment, and make sure that the activity is safe for all participants. On Memorial Day, they washed the kayaks in preparation for the summer. They were also inspired to clean out and reorganize the storage shed.
The dock is a short, pleasant walk for residents, and there is a seating area as well. You don’t have to go out on the river to enjoy this aspect of the Barton Arboretum. It is a wonderful resource to have our own private boat launch on the heart of our community.
