El Nino seems to be in full effect. Tough to plan
Dahlias – Full attractive blooms all through Summer. Replanted from De Cou’s garden
Kohlrabi – Popular vegetable in Wester Europe and is full of rich nutrients. Also called Knol Kohl in Europe and Asian countries
Asparagus – Mary Washington variety which is great dish when steamed. Takes two years
Chinese Bitter Melon – Yes, it is bitter and again packed with vitamins and great dietary addition for controlling blood sugar. Yes, this vegetable and its Indian cousin(s) are this gardener’s favorite vegetable
Ravi's Planting Adventures and lessons experienced
There are two types of Asparagus which are relatively easy to grow.
Mary Washington the skinny one and Jersey Supreme the thick one
March 23rd I have found out that trying to plant in the end of March did not work. I also found out the nursery sold me dried out roots.
April 15 I got another batch and they all sprouted. Layering technique is optional
Kohlrabi - A success given that it was attempted for the first time.
Lessons experienced and learnt,
- Thin out the seedling
- Aggressive growth rate
I agree this not an easy vegetable to grow in Southern NJ as it is not a native plant. It took me a while to figure out when to plant. Initial seedlings from my planter at home got destroyed by the infamous April frost. Lessons learned. Excellent addition to control blood sugar levels
